Once again recent events have revealed the true nature and purpose of England’s police force. Eyewitness reports and video footage of the Metropolitan Police raid on a climate change group the day after the G20 London protest last April, reveal the violent action meted out to innocent protesters. Taser guns and handcuffs were used to restrain individuals in an operation which the courts found to be illegal. Members of the Forward Intelligence Team (FIT) screamed at and threatened protesters with the sole aim of instilling terror in the hearts of those that dared to challenge the powers that are destroying our planet.

Also the action of the police against Unite Against Fascism supporters during the recent anti English Defence League demo in Bolton showed whose side the law were on. Riot police stormed the UAF protest and arrested both UAF joint secretaries, Weyman Bennett and Rhetta Moran.

Bennett was charged with “suspicion of conspiracy to organise violent disorder”. This handling is in stark contrast to the police turning a blind eye as EDL supporters gave Nazi salutes, shouted racist abuse and threw missiles into the UAF side of Bolton’s Victoria Square.

These recent incidents prove that it is becoming increasingly difficult to protest in the UK. Be this against the greed of the bankers, the destruction of our environment or racist filth, the message from the police is plain and simple; keep your mouth shut and don’t turn up to voice opposition to any of the evils created by capitalism. If anyone still believes that the fundamental aim of a society’s police force is to protect the property and personal safety of its citizens then they are sadly deluded. Our boys and girls in blue are here to protect the spoils of the rich and powerful. Under capitalism they are and always will be part of the repressive state apparatus.
